                                                                  Who is doing it

Iggy Ignatius – Founder and Chairman of ShantiNiketan (SN) Retirement Communities in Florida is the main architect of this concept.

In 2008, Iggy embarked on a journey to establish SN (Shanti Niketan), driven by his vision to create a distinctive active adult community tailored to Indian immigrants approaching retirement. His motivation arose from recognizing a significant gap in the market – the need for a retirement community that not only accommodates residents’ desires for pure vegetarian cuisine but also ensures freshly prepared healthy meals for every meal.

A key consideration in the development of this community was affordability. Iggy’s goal was to enable a couple to comfortably reside in the community, relying on a single person’s social security income. Presently, the average social security income stands at $1,500, and the current living expenses in SN amounts to approximately $1,300 per month, covering essential costs such as food for two, utilities, condo HOA dues, and property taxes. Under this visionary approach, Iggy has successfully built 300 homes, a feat that remains unmatched even after 15 years.

Iggy has a track record of introducing innovative ideas aimed at bringing happiness to people at the most economical costs.

His quest for affordable travel solutions led him to explore various YouTube videos created by diverse content creators. These videos showcased the affordability of retiring in various cities, particularly in regions like South America, Southeast Asia, and Europe etc. While these videos excelled in elucidating the cost-effective aspects of different cities, Iggy realized that aspiring travelers faced numerous practical challenges when it came to making travel arrangements:

  • Determining the ideal destinations.

  • Selecting suitable accommodations.

  • Identifying noteworthy attractions within each city.

  • Navigating transportation systems.

  • Locating quality dining options.

  • Finding grocery and vegetable markets, among other considerations.

Recognizing that every traveler grapples with these questions, Iggy set out to simplify and enhance the travel experience. The concept of a “WHEEL” was born, where the strategic rental of homes in each city for an entire year would significantly reduce rental costs compared to individual bookings on platforms like Airbnb or hotels.

The “Wheel Travel Club” was conceived, comprising 52 couples or individuals who would collectively share the annual rental expenses. A unique feature of this concept is the continuous communication between members. When one couple resides in a city, they maintain contact with the couple set to visit that city the following week and with the couple who recently stayed there. This exchange of information enriches the travel experience as members share tips on city exploration, top places to visit, and excellent dining spots.

Furthermore, expats already residing in a city are welcomed to join the Club as “AMBASSADORS.” These ambassadors serve as invaluable contacts for club members during their visits, offering assistance in case of emergencies and connecting them with other expats in the city. Ambassadors within our program are entitled to complimentary accommodations in cities of their preference in the event that a member originally scheduled to travel to that city experiences a change in their plans.

This collaborative approach offers a multitude of hidden benefits, greatly simplifying travel preparations. Once the destination cities and accommodations are known, much of the legwork typically required for travel arrangements is already completed.
